Black Bars
Hot-rolled with a dark mill scale. The most economical bar, with allowance left for machining.
Best for Heavy machining, forging stockRound, hex and square bars in ferrous and non-ferrous grades — black, peeled, bright or polished — for machining and engineering.

For turned and machined parts, the grade, condition and straightness of the bar decide how well it cuts and how long it lasts.
We supply round, hex and square bars in stainless steel, carbon and alloy steel, nickel alloys, titanium, copper, brass and aluminium. Bars are ordered by grade, diameter or size, finish and length, and are supplied with their mill test certificate.
If your component needs free-machining behaviour, a particular heat treatment condition or a tight tolerance, tell us and we will confirm what is available.
The finish decides how much stock must be removed and how accurate the bar is as supplied.

Best for Heavy machining, forging stock
Turned to remove the scale and surface defects, giving a clean, round bar.
Best for Precision turning
Cold-drawn or ground for a bright surface and close tolerance.
Best for High-volume automatic machining
Polished to a smooth, reflective surface for visible or sliding parts.
Best for Shafts, decorative workGoverning standards for each material family. Tell us the one on your purchase order.

Sizes, lengths and tolerances follow the product specification. Availability depends on grade and size.
Pick the finish by how much machining you plan to do.
| Finish | Process | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Hot rolled, as-scaled | Heavy machining and forging. |
| Peeled | Turned to remove scale and surface defects | Clean surface, good accuracy for turning. |
| Bright (cold drawn) | Drawn through a die | Close tolerance and bright surface; ready for machining. |
| Ground | Centreless ground | Tight diameter tolerance and fine surface. |
| Polished | Ground and polished | Shafts, spindles and visible parts. |

Ask on WhatsAppBlack bar is hot rolled with its mill scale. Peeled bar has been turned to remove the scale and surface defects. Bright bar is cold-drawn or ground, giving a smooth surface and closer tolerance, so less machining is needed.
These are ISO tolerance grades for the bar diameter. The smaller the number, the tighter the allowed variation. h9 is tighter than h11. Bright bars are commonly supplied to h9, h10 or h11.
Grade 303 (ASTM A582) contains added sulphur to improve machinability and is the usual choice for high-speed turning. For better corrosion resistance, 304 or 316 can be machined with the right tooling, though at lower speeds.
Yes — bars are supplied with a mill test certificate. Ask for EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, and mention PMI or ultrasonic testing if you need them. See our Quality Policy.
